Thousands of people have had near-death experiences, but scientists have argued that they are impossible. Dr. Eben Alexander was one of those scientists. A highly trained neurosurgeon, Alexander knew that NDEs feel real, but are simply fantasies produced by brains under extreme stress. Then, Dr. Alexander’s own brain was attacked by a rare illness. For seven days he lay in a coma. Alexander’s recovery is a medical miracle. But the real miracle of his story lies elsewhere. While his body lay in coma, Alexander journeyed beyond this world and encountered an angelic being who guided him into the deepest realms of super-physical existence. There he met, and spoke with, the Divine source of the universe itself.

I read this book with interest. Not because I wanted to see if there is a heaven, simply that it had been written by a Neurosurgeon. A man of scientific knowledge, I wondered what he would say. In my opinion the best review of this book is here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

I had my own beliefs before I read this and the book didnt change that but this is an interesting and thoughtful read; a 4★ from me.

This is single-handedly the best trip-report book Ive ever read. Far beyond anything Huxley could ever have dreamt up. Excellent read for every reason other than those the author intended.

Sam Harris brilliant response to this book is the perfect addendum. I wish Christopher Hitchens was still around to comment, Im sure his one line response would be more insightful than all 30+ of this books 2-3 page long chapters.

I have to be honest. Before I even started reading the book, I looked at the reviews to see how the book was but from my understanding, most people rated it pretty low. I started reading the book because I love everything about the human body and the brain and thought that this would be an interesting book to read following NDEs. However, I do agree with most people that the author may have made some of the stories up. I also agree with that he just wanted to sell the book for money. I did learn some interesting facts that I would have never known and thats why I rate it four stars. Being able to learn about the human body is fascinating for me and getting some facts really made it helpful for me to understand. It was also interesting that I picked this book for a project and I was the only one that did something about the human body while my other classmates picked a book that had to do with Humanities. I would recommend this book to a friend who is willing to learn interesting facts about the human brain.

I usually avoid @near death experience@ books because they lack objectivity; however, I was very curious about @Proof of Heaven@ as it is written by a well-established neurosurgeon who claimed to prove his own experience of heaven through scientific method. Unfortunately, I finished this book feeling disappointed. First of all, the author came across as quite arrogant - he had one of the RAREST diseases, he had gone FURTHER than anyone else had with his near death experience, and he was able to understand this because he was a PUBLiSHED neurosurgeon etc. etc. Second of all, the author dedicated a great portion of the book discussing his non-functioning cortex and how he didnt have the capability to dream, imagine, or hallucinate. The problem was that he never actually had any proof that these parts of his brain werent functioning; it was assumption based on what he knew about other cases of meningitis, except for his case was extremely rare, so without doing an fMRI every day that he was in a coma, there is no evidence to support this. Despite my skepticism, I did give the book 2 stars because those who have lost a loved one or are searching for proof of God will likely find comfort in this book, and that I appreciate.
